From Panic to Organic

July 8, 2008 By pgarry

That’s the theme of the quarterly newsletter from www.organicconsumers.org. Things I learned from this issue – in 1945, most of our 6 million family farmers were still rotating their crops, fertilizing with natural compost, and practicing the sustainable farming that had been learned from their grandparents.

And – 42% of Americans were growing vegetables and fruits in backyards, schoolyards and neighborhood spaces as part of the war effort.

Didn’t take us long – not even 70 years – to really screw things up, did it? So that most of us don’t know where our food comes from, and don’t really mind that it’s essentially mass produced factory food.

Shouldn’t take us too long to go back. If you’re ready to start, check out their website or just google whatever veggie you want to grow. My garden is living proof that it’s simple to do.

Sign up for their online weekly newsletter – a little shrill occasionally, but who wouldn’t be? I’m going to ask them to switch me all electronic, so I get the quarterly message on the screen as well. The greener the better. For all of us.
