I cannot believe I got so busy that I forgot to blog one of my favorite experiences of the entire spring – Star Trek the Prequel. But I can’t find it in here anywhere – so I must have written it in my head, and not in electrons.
Or if I did – I’ve still got more to say!
Saw it the first time at the Esquire in Clifton, the second time in Imax at Newport on the Levee. It was overwhelming, funny, big, great special effects, true to Trek, perfect characters and the back stories of how it all came to be. That Romulan ship – and her captain. Kirk the hotrod. Uhura – and Spock. Wow. Bones McCoy – and Scotty the trip. Even Captain Christopher Pike’s back story. Real inside stuff.
No need to be a trekker, though, to really enjoy this excellent movie. Sad and funny, scary and intimate. Maybe a bit more noise and narrow escapes than I needed. And a subtheme was definitely on view – how many times and ways can guys hang by their fingers off the edge of whatever, with only space beneath them? Lots.
I loved it – just willingly entered that Universe – that I’ve often liked a lot better than I like this one. More fair, more just, more integrated, more interesting. And definitely more fun!
