I’m working on reading the books that have gotten stacked up on, in and around my bedside table. The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke, is a Scholastic book, bought when Patrick Keegan was probably at Annunciation or maybe Sands (he’s a senior now!). Somehow it had ended up in the pile – and it turns out to be part travel narrative (which I love), part mystery, part magic, part social commentary – all set in a Venice that is just about now.
The characters are great, details are very telling, well written – it’s about 2 kids escaping from an awful aunt and uncle, so maybe that’s why it’s labeled as a kid story. Otherwise – it was a great read. I was rooting for the good guys – including the detective – all the way. And they won. So maybe that’s why it’s a kid story.
Though I personally believe happy endings can happen to grown ups, too. And they do, especially for Victor, the detective. Not so much for the wicked aunt and uncle. Made me happy. : >
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this book will work for you, too.
