Review: Alice in Wonderland

March 13, 2010 By pgarry

Who would have thought that Alice in Wonderland was a true story? I certainly am a believer, having seen this – intriguing? flamboyant? piercing? poignant? movie. Who would have thought that Johnny Depp’s amazing gifts would bring such depth to the Mad Hatter? and nearly bring tears? Helena Bonham Carter? Perfection in her version of madness!

Each detail, each scene. The caterpillar, Absalom. Tweedledee and Tweedledum. The brave and adorable dormouse. How about that March Hare? I had thought the White Rabbit would run on his back legs, but he bounced and leapt in traditional fashion. Cheshire Cat saving the day (and the Hatter’s life) several times. The animation of the cards – the glowering reds, the enigmatic and elegant whites. That Jabberwocky, also insane. The loyal bloodhound, the Bandersnatch, who switches sides. All in IMax 3D.

Go and live in another world for a while. It makes a lot of sense in its own crazy way. I’m thinking it reflects a lot of what we’re living through right now, as we move through the paradigm shift. Just remember – the worse it gets, the closer we are to resolution – as Alice demonstrates. She IS the champion!
