The Great Fireworks

September 6, 2010 By pgarry

Just about perfect – that’s what watching the end-of-summer Riverfest fireworks was this year! I watched from the spot I so enjoyed last year – right up the street and around the corner, on the edge of a cliff overlooking the river. Even less of it was public space this year, but there was enough. A couple I watched with last year showed up, and a young couple with a radio. We all took our spots, so everyone who came after had to find a way to look over or through us.

Good conversation and a lot of boat watching, and suddenly it was dark. The emcee started to call for Ohio to shout and then Kentucky, back and forth, to get us all warmed up. I think Ohio won, thanks to our help. A lot of power in a half million voices – even at home, I could hear and feel that energy building up all day. Like a giant bees nest just over the hill.

Then the lights and noise and music began. I loved the synchronization – and especially the variety of music this time. Lots of rock ‘n roll, lots of softer and differently rhythmed sounds, too. And some brand new fuji-mum fireworks, a bit of purple, and as part of the finale, what looked like giant white daisies with huge dark yellow centers popping out. Wow! The crowd downtown and our small crowd up on the hill all caught our breath in surprise.

Aaaahhhh. What a great and bright end of summer celebration. Sure made me happy!
