Lots more lettuces and a bunch of kale are now installed in the garden, to grow during the fall and early winter – and maybe even winter over! The lettuces died off in the heavy heat, and the kale just seemed to disappear – maybe the deer have figured out that kale is tasty.
The collard greens are really the only veggie that made it happily through our summer. They’re big and robust. We’ll have a great crop of asparagus next year – those feathery folk also didn’t seem to mind the summer. Of course, I watered all of them probably every other day. I’ll have to put in markers so we know where it is when it’s time to turn the dirt in the spring. And mark the rhubarb, too.
The grass around the veggie garden, and around the impatiens beds still looks great. Elsewhere, it’s brown, like most of the lawns everywhere right now.
Falls rains need to arrive soon – just not today and tomorrow! Wait until Monday, please!
