Book Review: Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand

November 7, 2010 By pgarry

This is one great book! Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand, subtitled A Novel of Adam and Eve, is written by Gioconda Belli, and translated from the Spanish by Margaret Sayers Peden.

It is lyrical, almost p0etry. Salman Rushdie writes that this book has established her as one of the great writers of Spanish-language literature. Adam wakes and wanders, naming as he goes, returns to sleep and wakes with Eve beside him. From the first, her awareness is of a very different quality than his. Elokim is very differently imagined as well, and the Serpent is beautiful and wise – really the other half of God. Leaving the Garden and their supportive friends the animals and plants there, they learn fear, survival, sex, birth and that awful day when Cain kills Abel.

Powerful, mesmerizing. Definitely worth reading. I got my copy from the library – you can, too!
