The Mideast and Mid-America

February 25, 2011 By admin

Isn’t this totally amazing? The Libyans are marching, the Bahrainis, Yemenis, Egyptians again, Iraquis – and the Ohioans, Hoosiers and Wisconsinites are marching, too.

It is as though our globe is being inundated with a pulse toward justice, dignity, fairness, democracy. And as though the leadership in those countries and in those states is entirely unable to hear those cries from the people, or to grant them basic human rights.

As an inhabitant of the political realm, I have always had Republican friends, while being consistently a liberal Democrat. But I am totally unable now to understand the Republican leadership in those states. It’s as though they believe that workers are subhuman, should be treated as the lowest of lifeforms. My feeling is that they really do not understand we are truly all in this together. If the garbage collector does not make a living wage and cannot support her or his family, our culture is failing.

Indiana has perhaps begun to figure this out – or at least to concede some political realities – but the other governors are not making much more sense than Colonel Qadaffi. As I said, Amazing.
