Play Review: Pride and Prejudice

March 6, 2011 By admin

Pretty much sold out – because the dish says it’s so yummy! Which it is. The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company hasn’t added any days as yet to its run of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice – but it pretty much has to, since it’s playing every day the theater is open to a packed house.

It’s still Jane Austen’s story. I’ve never read the book – that era’s books take forever (but perhaps I should check it out!) When I saw the movie several years ago, I thought it was good. When I saw the play on Friday, with the actors’ chemistry, it was great! Lynn Myers’ directing was first rate – the pacing, the timing. The set was fun, the lighting. But everyone in the theater was on edge, waiting for the brooding Darcy and the critical Elizabeth to get it together. They were each so much grander than they allowed others to know, making arrangements, taking care of family. All of this light weight energy flying around, and these 2 dark and powerful characters circling each other.

I finally got Jane Austen. And I’m so glad Darcy and Elizabeth allowed each other in.
