Restaurant Review: The Skinny Pig

June 20, 2011 By admin

I’ve been to Josh Campbell’s other restaurant: Mayberry’s, had eaten his food at Findlay Market, knew how creative and fun and yet down home-y and comfy it always is. So when I learned he was bringing all that goodness to my neighborhood, Walnut Hills, I was excited.

I kept hearing it was open, knew about where it was, and still didn’t find it ’til I got out of the car and walked. Turns out it’s in the second storefront south from the corner of Woodburn and Clayton. Easier to find now, ’cause there’s a small pig in the window. I wouldn’t say skinny.

A variety of flatbreads (he makes the bread at Mayberry’s) with inventive toppings, a bunch of salads, also creative. And pig or not in the name, much of the food is vegetarian/vegan, and the rest can pretty much be made so. I got the flatbread with beets, sweet and sour eggplant and curried yogurt. And the salad – fresh kale and fruit, a gorgeous dressing that looks like confetti, or maybe jimmie sprinkles – was also excellent. I never think of kale fresh and raw, yet I have a garden full of it. And then, just because – soft serve carrot cake ice cream. Amazing!

Plus – entrees are $6.99 to $7.99. Also amazing. They’re open at 10:30 every day, closing at 8 through the week, 9:30 on Friday and Saturday. A great meal, cheap, and a full tummy as we headed to the opera.
