Early Spring Backyard Update

February 17, 2012 By pgarry

I know it’s only mid-February. But it is no doubt spring in Cincinnati.? Wanna know how I know?? The chipmunks are awake and have been for several days!? Wanna know how else I know?? There have already been two scouts for two different tribes of ants wandering around in my kitchen!? The winter aconite and snow drops have been up and in bloom since mid-January!? The earliest I’ve ever seen the chippers awake is late-ish in March.? Maybe an ant at the very end of February.

The sage (three kinds), parsley, kale (2 kinds) and collard greens are still growing in the garden.? Several daffodils are nearly all the way up, as are the crocuses, etc.? Everything seems somewhere between 3 and 5 weeks early.? This is impossible, of course.? But true, nonetheless.
