Movie Review: The Avengers

May 28, 2012 By pgarry

Hadn’t seen a movie in a long time til a couple of Friday nights ago, seeing The Avengers at the (to me) new Kenwood theatre.

Now I know what the fuss over Robert Downey, Jr. is about – and lots of other great characters, too.? This was a great lighthearted summer movie, lots of action, big sets and settings – all of Manhattan, for instance.

These super heroes were clearly not natural collaborators, but they learned.? And they played off and with each other’s skills.? It was fun to watch the Hulk become his big self.? The few women held their own pretty well.? Would have been nice to see more diversity of color and race in the cast.? I’m sure some comics folk have good ideas for that.

My only complaint is about how boys love to have the incoming invaders and those big fights take up so much of the film.? The noise, the repetition, the hundreds of little space ships, the big alligator ship.? Took way too long and was not interesting in the least.? We knew, after all, who was going to win.

That aside – a fun and interesting summer film.
