I love dragons – they are all over my house – ceramic, soapstone, stuffed fabric, molded metal, plastic dragons from Dragonheart with movable wings, drawings of dragons.
And when grandson Patrick was younger, we read two kids’ series of books about dragons that were wonderful.? And full of a wholeness and generosity and values that support the spiritual path.
The funny series? is called The Enchanted Forest Chronicles – the first book is Dealing with Dragons, second is Searching for Dragons, next Calling on Dragons and last Talking to Dragons.? The heroine is Princess Cimorene, who, on being told to marry a particularly boring prince, goes out into the garden and proclaims ‘I’d rather be eaten by a dragon’.? ‘That can be arranged’, says a voice at her feet.? And we’re off to meet dragon Kazul.? Witches, djinn, a stone prince.? Laugh out loud funny.? Your kid, grandkid, or just you will love them.
Ancient Chinese mythology is the basis for the other series.? The dragon princess Shimmer is out to find a magic pebble which contains a stolen sea.? She doesn’t believe human boy Thorn can be of help.? They work together through 4 books of powerful, beautiful, scary and wonderful stories:? Dragon of the Lost Sea, Dragon Steel, Dragon Cauldron and Dragon War.
Reading to kids or just to each other is wonderful.? And these are great books to start on.
