Book Review: Promised Land

November 29, 2012 By pgarry

Another old book review – Robert B. Parker’s Promised Land – a Spenser novel.? This book was published in 1976.? and I haven’t read one of his books since somewhere around that time.

This is an excellent work of that genre – the smart aleck, sarcastic, cynical private investigator.? Excellent because Spenser has a strong love interest, and they actually discuss some of these issues in depth.? And I don’t think I had ever encountered Spenser – he’s a clear strong character with a unique slant and I know I’d remember him.? This novel includes Hawk, an anachronistic character who lives by the same code and work ethic as Spenser even though, technically, he is a bad guy.

Just checking with wikipedia, I find that Parker died in 2010, while writing.? An excellent way for an excellent writer to leave the planet, don’t you think?? and I think next time I’m in the mood for the hard boiled detective – I’ll get a list of Parker / Spenser and work my way through them.
