Just in case you never stray from your big box grocery – or even into its health food section – I want to tell you what you’d find in terms of milk at a Whole Foods or any natural foods / health foods store.
There’s hemp milk – I love the mere idea of using hemp. I have lots of hemp shirts and bags and a pair of slacks. The Body Shop has hemp lotions and body butters. Hemp is so much better for the earth than growing cotton. And any of these milks will be better for your body – and make it happier – than cow’s milk.
There’s almond milk – for many folk, this is the favorite. And there’s a saying among those of us into healthy food – 7 almonds a day and cancer never appears.
There’s rice milk – this is great stuff, and comes in several flavors: regular, vanilla and chocolate. You can also find rice ice cream in the freezer section. This was my favorite, until soy milk hit the scene.
Soy and I are so happy with each other – so soy milk is my favorite. And vanilla or very vanilla is my favorite flavor. I love it on cereal, use it as a substitute for milk in any recipe, love it for bread pudding with my homemade Christmas bread. I always have a half gallon in the fridge.
I love goat cheese – you can see that our bodies are a lot more like goat bodies than those huge bodies of cows. I always have various kinds of goat cheese in the fridge – so many kinds! And sheep cheese, too – all of it less problematic for us humans than cow products. Lots of soy and other un-cheeses in the dairy case at your natural foods store, too – check them out.
The only cow’s milk I have in my house is organic butter (try organic butter – real flavor, not just grease!), from cows that aren’t injected and dejected. And lots of times, that butter is from some country in another part of the world (Denmark, Ireland). I also love goat butter. And there are pasture butters, spring butters – really tasty!
So go exploring – it is sure fun to do!
