Another interesting winter. Although I really prefer last year’s – no snow at all and temperatures always in the 40s. The short term benefits of global warming.
This year, it’s hot and then it’s cold and then it rains, and a bit of snow has fallen. But – what I’m alarmed at – is the daffodils. I noticed last week that the snow drops’ very skinny leaves had started to pop up. It’s maybe 2 to 3 weeks early, but not so bad. And they are very hardy little creatures, who hang in and provide hope often through weeks of winter.
The snowdrops are continuing to push up – another inch or so of leaves, and they’ll start to pop out their shy flowers. This morning, however, when I was looking at them, I noticed – and it was very disconcerting – the daffodils in the bed above the driveway are nearly 3 inches up. They should not be even starting until March, maybe the second week.
I will provide energy and warmth – but next week, we’re supposed to have some days with lows of 9 to 16 degrees. This is not making me happy. We need to change our habits, for sure, and let the planet cool off.
