latw.org – that’s the web address for Los Angeles Theater Works. And what a find it is!
LATW can be heard on wvxu.org on Saturday nights at 8 p m, following Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. And since I’ve been hibernating a bit this winter, I’ve been catching some of them. Plays, all kinds of plays, with all kinds of actors – fabulous work.
At some point last summer, the radio stayed on after Prairie Home Companion and I realized I was hearing a fabulous discussion. It was the play 8 – on California’s Proposition 8 – starring Martin Sheen, George Clooney – and Brad Pitt as the judge! Wow!
Last night, it was Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo. Which, since I came a bit late to theatre-going, I had heard of but never seen. What a powerful play. And as loud and rackety as an Irish family in full cry, though this family is Italian / Sicilian.
Several recently on science themes, but really every kind of play might be heard. And you can hear them on the website, download, etc, though there seems to be a charge for some of them sometimes.
I attend tons of plays here in town and love that. But now I love these great works as well, new and old, huge casts and small, intimate stories or huge issues. It’s all excellent theatre. What a treat! I love my radio. : >
