Play Review: Midsummer Night’s Dream

April 29, 2013 By pgarry

I have, of course, seen William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream before, at several theaters – and at least once before at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. And have never, somehow, been able to follow it, really ‘get’ it.

But of a recent Saturday night – it all made sense, and was moreover even funnier than I had seemed before. All of Shakespeare’s comedies have mixed up identities, crossing and confusion of genders, and outright farce, playing to the mostly standing audiences. I’ve never had trouble understanding all the craziness, except with Midsummer.

It was all quite wonderful, and everything fell into place in my brain. This company is so incredible, talented, young, smart and willing to go for it. I appreciate everything they do.

And I’m going to make the last play of this season, Measure for Measure, part of my birthday celebration this year. Sung Korean for dinner beforehand, followed by the short walk to the Shakespeare. It will be (as always) a perfect birthday!
