Americans have never figured out what to do about May Day – a celebration of the fertility of the earth and of The Goddess for hundreds of years in Europe. And now in many places, a celebration of the law, of workers, of justice. Somehow with us that must have gotten mixed up with communism (do any of the isms make sense any more? let’s just stop thinking that way!). My feeling is we should focus on love, fairness and mercy (not on sacrifice, pain and punishment) – and most issues would sort themselves right out!
At any rate – this is Beltane! We can just lighten up! And lighting up is what Beltane is all about – bonfires from hill to hill clear across all the Celtic countries in Europe. As soon as you saw the light on the hill across the valley, you lit yours. And then you partied like crazy, had a wonderful time, and enjoyed all the beauties of the season.
Which, by the way, was summer – this was the first day of summer in those ancient times. I can feel the heat, hear the snapping twigs and see all those beautiful people dancing in joy, power and peace. Aaaaahhhhh!
