So we all got in our mail boxes, from our letter carriers, a notice that last Saturday, May 11, they would be collection bags of food to deliver to local food banks and pantrys.
I like opportunities like this to make a difference. It’s easy and simple. I threw in paper towels and plastic storage bags for good measure.
And I tried not to put in any weird food. As a vegetarian and enjoyer of ethnic foods, my pantry shelves don’t carry a lot of standard food – no Campbell’s soups, no canned corn, for instance. I put in lots of cans of organic black, kidney and pinto beans. I didn’t put in any bags of quinoa or unusual rices. I did put in a box of gluten free vanilla flavored organic cereal – just to make myself feel I was giving folk a chance to try something new that they might actually eat.
Fun to pack the bag, fun to watch Lois, my mail carrier, take it away.
