Wimbledon 2013

July 8, 2013 By pgarry

Wow! One of the best Wimbledons ever – even though Roger Federer was knocked out in the second round and Rafael Nadal in the first

The women were much more riveting than usual, for me. Normally, except for Serena, it’s a question of who loses serve the least. That and the noisy grunting is a bit much – tedious, not entertaining. And having watched Serena threatening to stuff the ball down the throat of that tiny linesperson pretty much finished her with me.

But this time, the semifinal match with #23 Sabine Lisicki and #4 Agnese Radwanska was great tennis. They were toe to toe through all 3 sets, fighting to the last point. I missed seeing the final, with Lisicki and #15 Marion Bartoli – where Lisicki came down to earth with a splat. But Lisicki will definitely be back up there at the US Open.

The drama throughout was incredible, as so many seeds fell so quickly – astonishing matches everywhere. And then the men’s singles final, pitting #1 Novak Djokovic against #2 Andy Murray of Scotland / Britain. One for the ages, with Andy (a fellow Celt) taking the Djoker down in straight sets – with each set taking over an hour, fought tooth and nail, drop shot by lob.

Can’t wait for the quarterfinals here at the Cincinnati Masters – I’ll be out there all day watching every quarterfinal match. And then the US Open – Andy will definitely be a contender there, since he’s the reigning champion.
