Rain, rain – have we had rain! And nearly two weeks of heat, which has now abated – strangely, since this is mid-ish-July, normally the very hottest time of the year – and the years, as we all know, have been getting hotter.
So the veggie and herb gardens are totally out of control – the plants are growing, and the weeds are thriving, too. The weeds on the patio I’m controlling with boiling water – so when I make a cup of tea, I take the remainder in the kettle out to the patio, pick a weed, and pour it on. The patio is looking much better than a couple of weeks ago.
Except for where the big tree that came down during a storm two weeks ago is mostly still sprawled all over the upper and lower patios, with lots of honeysuckle pulled down as well. Actually, I got modest-sized pieces pulled onto the brush pile in the side yard, and cleaned up the shattered bits from all the beds. I got one big piece nearly off the patio, so it doesn’t look to bad from the back door.
The veggie garden could have been destroyed, the patio furniture, the back of the house. None of that happened – it fell perfectly between all of those potential targets.
Interesting to see how the wildlife just adjusts to the new reality of different places to hang out, and is very happy with it all.
Grandson Patrick is due to come over on Sunday and help me pull, tug and lift big chunks of trunk into the woods. I’m looking forward to it.
