My friend Michael died on Election Day. We’ve been friends since we were each part of the first crop of Legislative Aides at City Hall, 1971. He worked for Jerry Springer, I worked for Charlie Taft.
He and all of Jerry’s guys were Xavier graduates, all essentially Kennedy Democrats, drawn by the Kennedy example of leadership and service, almost all Celts / Irish, with that mix of joy and – perhaps doom is the right word.
Michael had a real gift for politics, which engaged his genius – and he was a genius, one of the few I have known. I remember lots of afternoons circumnavigating the 3rd floor of City Hall, walking those huge hallways, working on solutions to the world’s many problems – and to the particular way those problems affected our Cincinnati.
Bon Voyage, Michael. Now you can circumnavigate the Universe, pushing toward the truth with that Archangel, and maybe a dragon or two.
