Review: Dayton Art Institute

January 7, 2014 By pgarry

So a friend and I were in Dayton in November for a couple of meetings, with time in between the first meeting (lunch) and the second (a late afternoon reception). We never even thought about shopping. I remembered, from years ago, the Dayton Art Institute, situated statuesquely on the hill across the Great Miami River from downtown.

So we wandered over, finding our way through lots of construction traps, and found a nearly perfect small collection, with Objects of Devotion – medieval European alabaster works, a show of a woman sculptor’s recent pieces, and a good sized display of black and white photos of washerwomen in Paris nearly a hundred years ago.

Quite a variety of special displays – plus the varied and well selected works in the permanent collection. And a great gift shop! Some smart folk with a lot of love and a great eye are obviously running that place.
