Book Review: The Beautiful Mystery

March 9, 2014 By pgarry

Each Chief Inspector Gamache mystery is an exquisite piece of writing unto itself. This one, in a long hidden monastery in the forests of Quebec, whose monks are world famous for their plainchant, reaches farther into the depths. Of the monks, the abbot and prior, and of Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Belvoir, Gamache’s second in command.

The descriptions of the journey, and of the monastery itself, and its surrounds put us right there. We share the monks’ daily routine, finding its peace and beauty. There is pain in several places mixed in with all the beauty.

A stunning book, which yet left a great hole with its ending.
