What I Found Out About Myself While Cleaning Off a Bookshelf

March 18, 2014 By pgarry

There was just too much stuff in the old red bookcase in my office. Much more fun to look out at the birds, squirrels, deer – and even the occasional hawk – than to organize those shelves.

But the spirit suddenly struck for a few moments last weekend, and I started to sort the very bottom shelf. And what did I find a ton of but crafty books, coloring books, origami patterns, papercutting designs and lots of stencils.

I often forget that part of myself – I’m sure she’d like to come out and play more often. I love crewel embroidery and counted cross stitch, dragon and butterfly temporary tattoos and stickers, plastic and clay sculpture.

I still do jigsaw puzzles – there are 2 completed puzzles out on the dining room table right now. And I love the jumble and cryptoquip in the Enquirer – that may have a lot to do with my still getting the newspaper.

Actually, having given away the TV several years ago may make all those tasks harder to get to. The TV makes a great excuse for sitting down, and that’s a nice time to do something with one’s hands.

But I could always play Irish or world beat or new age music…. my artist self is a big part of me, and the writing that I do is great creativity. Still, I’m missing the playing with color and texture that all those other pursuits give me. For instance, I had such a good time a few days ago re-creating my dragon with new color.

Thanks for that reminder, Spirit Self / Goddess! Now – let’s get to it! : >
