As part of my reading some really old mysteries to clear my brain, I found this old John Dickson Carr, To Wake the Dead, featuring one of his famous characters, Dr. Gideon Fell. I had read several of Dr. Fell’s mysteries, but not this one.
John Dickson Carr, who wrote all the time and under many pseudonyms, was continuously creative. This one is from 1938, and really portrays that ancient time, 2 years before I was born.
It is all about the English upper class from that era, and the women were largely terra incognita and sometimes blank slates to the men in the book. And Dr. Fell is omniscient even when he’s still exploring all the issues. Being read with that understanding, it was even more fun.
Try sampling around like this, perhaps in a used bookstore somplace. Try it – you might like it! : >
