This had been on my list since well before Christmas – an overdue trip to our neighborhood French store, Le Bon Vivant. My ostensible object was the purchase of French butter, which I love. Organic butters and all the butters from other countries have so much flavor. And my belief is that we need fat, and that butter is a great way to get fat.
Show me a butter with lowered fat / reduced fat, and I will show you a product I’ve never eaten and never will. If it’s been altered from its original good nature by additions, subtractions, or alterations – which includes being produced by cows in confinement – it’s not real food. But I digress.
I always go into Le Bon Vivant with an open mind, and an unworried purse. This is shopping for pure pleasure, and a present to myself. This time I found presents for my friend Samantha, lots of different chocolates (including Noel Fancy French Truffles – isn’t it great that we now have lots of studies detailing how good dark chocolate is for us?), several kinds of honey, goat cheese, quince jam – and some pot holders that matched others I had bought several years ago.
Aaaahhhhh. Such a treat to just go in and buy what I want. The very few things I regret in my life are the times when I didn’t. And this store is a great place for that kind of indulgence.
